| Summary, etc. | Bien que l’interaction entre les membres d’une équipe sportive ait déjà été prise en compte lors de l’analyse de l’expertise et de la performance de l’équipe, il n’existe aucune recherche comparable portant sur l’interaction des équipes d’arbitres en fonction de leur expertise. Sur la base de recherches en laboratoire sur les fixations oculaires, nous avons supposé que le fait d’entraîner les fixations oculaires des arbitres est un moyen important d’améliorer leur performance. Afin de déterminer si les arbitres de handball coordonnent leurs fixations oculaires, les fixations oculaires d’une équipe d’arbitres de handball ont été analysées pendant qu’ils arbitraient un match. Les résultats ont montré que les arbitres ont principalement fixé les mêmes aspects des actions de jeu (75 %) et se sont comportés différemment, comme indiqué dans les directives existantes pour l’arbitrage au handball. En d’autres termes, les résultats actuels indiquent que la coordination des fixations oculaires des arbitres de handball semble loin d’être optimale (ils se concentrent trop souvent sur les mêmes aspects des actions de jeu) et devrait être prise en compte lorsqu’il s’agit de réfléchir aux moyens d’améliorer la performance des arbitres. Finalement, nous ouvrons la discussion sur les directions potentielles à suivre ainsi que les limites de l’approche de recherche actuelle, de façon à orienter les études futures afin de mieux comprendre le rôle de l’expertise chez les arbitres. |

| Summary, etc. | Though the interaction of team members in sport has already been considered when analysing team expertise and performance, there is no comparable research addressing the interplay of referee teams as part of their expertise. Based on lab-based research on coordinated gaze behaviour, we assumed that orchestrating referees’ gaze is an important way of improving referee performances. To first scrutinize if handball referees coordinate their gaze, the gaze fixations of a handball referee team was analysed while they were presiding over a game. Results showed that referees mostly fixated the same aspects of game action (75%) and behaved differently as stated in existing guidelines for refereeing in handball. That is, the current results indicate that handball referees’ coordination of gaze behaviour seems far from optimal (they focused on the same aspects of game action too often) and should be considered when thinking about avenues to performance improvement. Furthermore, we tried to discuss potentials and limitations of the current research approach for future studies that seem necessary to gain more insight into the expertise interplay of referees. |
