So-called “non-conventional” care practices, sometimes called “alternative medicine,” “complementary medicine,” “natural medicine,” or “alternative medicine,” now called “complementary and alternative medicine” (CAM), are diverse both in the techniques used and in the theoretical foundations invoked. Not scientifically recognized by so-called “conventional” medicine, nor taught during health professionals’ initial training, and not benefiting from any evaluation or supervision, they are booming. Their exponential growth and the way they are used led to the creation of the French Interministerial Mission for Monitoring and Combating Sectarian Aberrations (Miviludes). What can we say about these practices? What are patients’ representations of them, and how important is their use? But also, what are the risks?
