How Can One Quit a Vocation? The Case of Contemporary Dancers
Sorignet, Pierre-Emmanuel
How Can One Quit a Vocation? The Case of Contemporary Dancers - 2004.
91
A dancer cannot avoid the question of what comes after the dancing career. Many will adopt avoidance strategies and remain committed to a rhetoric that hinges around being faithful to their original calling. The mourning process is triggered by the growing awareness of one’s waning competitiveness on a job market where being young is essential. The dancers whose careers come to an end must face the task of leaving aside one of their social lives while anticipating and thinking up a new professional project. The range of possibilities varies from one dancer to the next — each dancer draws upon his or her professional, familial and educational resources to think up a new career path which doesn’t endanger their self-image.
